Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is a bubbling city of beach, samba, carnival and soccer with more than 9 million inhabitants. Many soccer players show what they can on the world-famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.
The 'Cidade Maravilhosa' is probably discovered in January 1502 by the Portuguese Gonçalo Coelho, when he thought he landed in the mouth of a river, and therefor named the place Rio (river) de Janeiro (January). Several years later the famous Amerigo Vespucci saw this area and made it known to the world that 'if somewhere on earth a Paradise exists, it must be here'. Because of its site at the Bay of Guanabara amidst tropical hills and with exotic beaches, the metropole has a big attraction to many, wtiness the fact that it is the most fotogenic and most fotographed city in the World.
Known throughout the World for its Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the Maracana football stadium and the bubbling and swinging Carnival. But also the Pão the Açucar (Sugarloaf) and the Christ statue on the 710 meter high Corcovado, with a fantastic view on Rio, are a visit more than worth. The City is surrounded by lush tropical mountains, the large bay with many ships and the white beaches. It gives the City a fairytale atmosphere, but reality often is different. It is a real metropole that lives 24 hours per day, with many modern but also very poor neighbourhoods (favela's). The carioca's (inhabitants of Rio) colour the city with many colours, complemented by samba, bossa nova, carnival and footbal on the beaches.
|
|
Day 2
Full day at leisure in this imposing city. In order to get to know a little of Rio you should make an excursion to the Corcovado to see the vibrant city at the feet of the 38 meter high Christ. It is also very interesting to make a guided tour of the old neighbourhoods Santa Teresa and Lapa where an old electric tram rattles through the narrow streets, transporting many locals for a mere 60 Centavos to Rio downtown. Lunchtip: restaurant Sobre Natural in Santa Teresa, lots of atmosphere and a good kitchen!

The old jail 'Dois Rios'(old river)in use untill recently, has been able to delay the turbulent development of tourism and thus keep the lush nature intact. Abrão Village nowadays is a meetingplace for many carioca's and foreign visitors and offers many bars, restaurants and pousada's. The island offers many trails through the forests, ending at the beautiful and deserted beaches, at waterfalls or historic monuments like the old aquaduct.
Lopes Mendes is the most famous of the beaches, the first Brazilian beach in the South in open connection with the ocean and for that reason an excellent place for board- and windsurfers.

Ilhabela
Ilhabela is, without doubt, one of the nicest places along the coast between Santos and Rio de Janeiro. It is a vulcanic island with mountains elevating upto 1.370 metres and covered with tropical (Atlantic) forest. Dozens of waterfalls, beautiful beaches and an Indigo coloured ocean contributed to the popularity of Ilhabela, and together with the many colonial Portuguese buildings it makes an island for a pleasant stay.
In weekends it is a populair destination for many inhabitants of são Paolo, of which many rich contributed to the arising of hotels, pousada's and yachtharbours. The capital Vila Ilhabela is situated at the sheltered West and has approx. 6000 inhabitants who make their living from fishing, sugarcane and tourism.
Several hikes can be made through the forest along well signposted trails, overwhelming the walker with sights of nature, waterfalls (possibility to swim), mountains and the many species of exotic animals. The East and the South have the most beautiful beaches of the island, but are sometimes difficult to reach because the bad condition of the roads, which are not very well maintained by the houseowners which like to live as quiet as possible.
All in all, Ilhabela is worth a visit, even though it is more expensive than the average Brazilian destination.

São Paulo
This city was established by the Jesuits in 1554 and was untill mid 19th century a small and quiet place, after which it became to grow turbulently because of the success of the coffee plantations.
Immigrants from over the whole world came to fill in the absences of workers and nowadays is it the third largest Italian city, the largest Japanese city outside Japan, the third largest Lebanese city outside Libya, the largest Portuguese city outside Portugal and the largest Spanish city outside Spain.
The mixture of races and ethnical groups has had through the years a big influence on the cultural and economical centre and has the biggest number of inhabitants from all towns of Brazil.
Like all metropolitans São Paulo has some problems with (air) pollution and to much traffic, but through the reconstruction of the centre and a subway system who was duplicated trifold, it is expected that the climate of living will be better at the end of 2004.
Nowadays São Paulo is a city where much culture in the form of museums, shows, musical performances etc. can be enjoyed, besides the many markets where the visitor will be treated perfectly on a gastronomic festivity: Mediterranean, West and East European, Asiatic, Scandinavian, Japanese and especially many pizzerias where Italians and American Italians from Chicago give a perfect show as accomplished jugglers with pizzabottoms.
