Minas Gerais
a mountainous state in interior Brazil, at an average of 700 meters above sealevel. The state is some 600.000 km2 large and counts 18 million inhabitants. Its highest top (2890 m) is the Pico da Bandeira in Serra do Caparáo. The large differences in height make that Minas Gerais has many different temperatures which accounts for a large variety in flora and fauna. The state has basically three kinds of vegetation: caatinga (bushlike), mata atlãntica (tropical rainforest) and cerrado (savannalike with many different kinds of grass).
Minas Gerais (literally: general mines) once had a dense forest. Many young men from São Paulo came in the 17th and 18th Centuries to Minas to capture Indians. They took a flag (in Portuguese 'bandeira') with them for easy identification and were therefor called 'bandeirantes'. Most of them had an Indian-Portuguese background and spoke Indian Tupi and Portuguese, learned how to handle weapons from Portuguese and Indian origin, making them undefeatable. During their 'warfares' they reached as far as the Andes in Peru and the Amazone, where they punt the rivers on maps and found gold in Sabará in 1695. After finding gold and diamond at the end of the 17th Century very large parts of forest were hacked, making Minas Gerais to what it is today.
In the 19th Century also iron, bauxiet and magnesium were found, and upto today these are excavated. Alongside the roads of Minas Gerais you will see mines in full operation, with gigantic trucks that are able to transport 100 tons of minerals, which is taken to the railstation for transportation to the port in Vítoria in the State Espirito Santo.
Unfortunately many eucalyptus trees are being cut for the charcoal and paperindustry, leaving less and less trees.

Tiradentes
Tiradentes, named after dentist Joaquim da Silva Xavier, a nationalistic fighter for freedom who was executed in Rio de Janeiro and became a real hero of the folk, is an innovative colonial village at 214 kilometres distance from Belo Horizonte.
Tiradentes is considered by the architectural collection as one of the cities that most knew how to preserve the baroque art and the centenary housing. Small handycraft shops with articles made of silver and precious gems are hidden throughout its narrow and steep streets.
There are museums, churches and many possibilities to make some excursions to the mountains. Aleijadinho painted and sculptured many buildings( for example the façade of the Santo Antônio church).
Tiradentes belongs to the architectonic collection as one of the cities which knows best to keep the baroque art and the age-old houses.

day 2
after breakfast you drive the short distance through a beautiful landscape to Ouro Preto. Overnight in pousada Clássica.

Ouro Preto
Many beauties are kept far from the sun. In this itinerary, the most popular of these cities is Ouro Preto, a city with little over 65 thousand inhabitants, located at 399 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte, the cradle of the Movimento da Inconfidência (patrioc movement against the Portuguese domination in Brazil), which fought for Brazil's independence.
Ouro Preto is the largest of a series of historic cities that have been preserved in their entirety with their baroque architecture. It was in this environment that the art of the sculptor and architect known as Aleijadinho was born, with a good number of his works already on display. From its stone-paved streets you can have a privileged view of this past richness, especially churches. In the museums you can learn a little more about the history of Brazil. And along the way you can make a tour through the small handycraft shops, selling articles made with sandstone and precious gems.
Once Ouro Preto was the capital of Minas Geraís because of the many precious metals that were found, which were transported immediately to the colonial motherland Portugal.
The sight of the city, towards the background of green hills is probably unique: panorama’s of baroque buildings against the mountainous background, especially in the morning dusk, will afford the most beautiful pictures.
Really nice to do is to take a walk along the small shops with handicrafts, which sell nice and beautiful articles of silver and precious jewels.

After a failed attempt to kill Dom José, King of Portugal, brother Lourenço fled to Brazil where, in 1774, he erected the sanctuary. As a result of the killing attempt, his complete family was murdered in 1777. The sanctuary is situated at a height of 1300 meters, and was a school and seminary during 150 years for boys of the upperclass of Minas Gerais. Many Brazilian politicians were educated here.
In 1883 the neo Gothic church Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homems was built next to the sanctuary, and both sanctuary and church were completely restored in 1991, reforming them into the Hospedaria do Caraça.
Brother Tobias, passed away in 2002, every evening rare wolves that live in the park: the guará. Upto today some wolves return to the court every evening hoping for food.
