Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is a bubbling city of beach, samba, carnival and soccer with more than 9 million inhabitants. Many soccer players show what they can on the world-famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.
The 'Cidade Maravilhosa' wass probably discovered in January 1502 by the Portuguese Gonçalo Coelho, when he thought he landed in the mouth of a river, and therefor named the place Rio (river) de Janeiro (January). Several years later the famous Amerigo Vespucci saw this area and made it known to the world that 'if somewhere on earth a Paradise exists, it must be here'. Because of its site at the Bay of Guanabara amidst tropical hills and with exotic beaches, the metropole has a big attraction to many, witness the fact that it is the most fotogenic and most fotographed city in the World.
Known throughout the World for its Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, the Maracana football stadium and the bubbling and swinging Carnival. But also the Pão the Açucar (Sugarloaf) and the Christ statue on the 710 meter high Corcovado, with a fantastic view on Rio, are a visit more than worth. The City is surrounded by lush tropical mountains, the large bay with many ships and the white beaches. It gives the City a fairytale atmosphere, but reality often is different. It is a real metropole that lives 24 hours per day, with many modern but also very poor neighbourhoods (favela's). The carioca's (inhabitants of Rio) colour the city with many colours, complemented by samba, bossa nova, carnival and footbal on the beaches.

Ouro Preto
Many beauties are kept far from the sun. In this itinerary, the most popular of these cities is Ouro Preto, a city with a little over 65 thousand inhabitants, located at 99 km from the capital, Belo Horizonte, the cradle of the Movimento da Inconfidência (patriotic movement against the Portuguese domination in Brazil), which fought for Brazil's independence.
Ouro Preto is the largest of a series of historic cities that have been preserved in their entirety with their baroque architecture. It was in this environment that the art of the sculptor and architect known as Aleijadinho was born, with a good number of his works already on display. Aleijadinho's Prophets and Steps are in the town of Congonhas. From its stone-paved streets you can have a privileged view of this past's richness, especially at churches. At the museums you can learn more about the history of Brazil. And along the way you can make a tour of the small handyraft shops, which sell articles made with sandstone and precious gems.
Ouro Preto once was the capital of Minas Geraís because of the many precious metals that were found, which were immediately transported to the colonial motherland Portugal.
The site of the city, towards the background of green hills is probably unique: panorama’s of baroque buildings against the mountainous background, especially in the morning dusk, will make the most beautiful pictures.

Foz do Iguaçu
In Foz do Iguaçu are the widest and according to many people the most beautiful waterfalls of the whole world.
The beauty of its 275 falls that form an impressive spectacle of the Waterfalls added to a tourism infrastructure - complete hostelry network, space for events, rich gastronomy - make of Foz do Iguaçu an ever more attractive destination for those who seek destinations that ally nature with ecological programs. The first step to modernize and increment the tourist flow was the privatization of the National Park of Iguaçu. In a first phase, a new Visitors Center was built with capacity to take 12 thousand people per day, equipped with tourist reception service and 24-hour banking services, souvenir store, telephones, restrooms, parking for cars, shuttles, and buses. The transportation system in the Park's interior is now done with modern two-store tourism buses with panoramic view, accompanied by guides who give information in many languages.
Situated at the border of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, 275 waterfalls are falling down more than 80 metres over a width of 3 kilometres downwards through a special and accrued tropical rainforest.
From afar you can hear the sound of the always falling water mass, which forms a curtain beyond the green back wall of the jungle with many birds and colourful butterflies. In the rainy period the quick streaming water has a brownish colour, the water is clear in the dry season. The whole area is a Parque Nacional and is listed on the world heritage of the United Nations.
Definitely worth a visit is the Itaipúdam, which is constructed for revival of energy and is one of the biggest dams of the world.
|
