during this selfdrive you will get acquainted with the wonders of nature of the Pantanal, also referred to as 'terra de ninguem'(no-mansland), a half open tropical area that is flooded annually during the rainyseason from October to March. Water and sun, the dreamcombination for an exhubarant flora and a wonderful biotope for the most fascinating animals of this world. More than 270 different species of birds among which the parrot, colibri, tucan, ibis, kingfisher and jabiru, caimans, otters and piranhas in the rivers. Anaconda's, iguana's, anteters, capivara's and monkeys and, last but not least, the Pantanal is the best place on earth to see panthers in the wild!
The Pantanal, together with Argentina, has the largest number of cattle throughout the country.
This selfdrive is possible in 5 or 6 days, for accommodation can be chosen from simple or midclass hotels/fazenda's.

day 1
arrival at the airport of Campo Grande, where you will pick up the rental car. The start of the trip leads you though a beautiful landscape, stretched sugarcane fields and large hurds of cattle. Since the airport is situated at the edge of the city, it is easy to find your way out, finding yourself in short time driving through inviting villages along -in this part of Brazil- good roads.
The next nights you will stay in Bonito.

Pantanal
Parque Nacional Pantanal is a virginal nature area in the sates Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. The colourful flora and fauna is só overwhelming that is leaves no person untouched. In the trees alongside the rivers ibisses, storks, colibri's, parrots and other birds can be seen, and on the shores caimans are resting and enjoying the sun. From November to April, the rainy season, the area is flooded, making it possible to sail in boats through narrow canals. The temperature during this period is an average 30-35 Celsius with a high humidity and daily rainshowers. The other months of the year the average temperature is 20-25 Celsius, and the roads are easier accesable.

day 2
at 07.00 your local guide awaits you in the Pousada to drive with you to the Gruta do Lago Azul, a beautiful cave of which the water seems deepblue. After this ecursion you drive to the Rio Sucuri where, after a short walk through the forest, you will float the river downstream in approx. 1,5 hours. An exciting float through crystalclear water.

day 3
from Bonito you head north on a good gravelroad into the southern Pantanal. After crossing the Miranda river twice, a small dirtroad through forests and meadows leads to the Refúgio da Ilha/Baia Grande. This ride will take some 2 hours. On your way a visit can be made to the Boca da Onça private reserve with it's worthwile short hike along 14 different waterfalls (the highest being 156 meters). This visit (entrance fee not included) takes at least 3-4 hours. Dinner and overnight at Refúgio da Ilha.

day 4 and 5
two full days to discover the beauty of this unique eco-system on foot, horseback and motorized canoe, acompanied by an expert local guide observing flora, fauna and yet untouched landscapes.

day 6
after breakfast you head back towards Campo Grande, approximately 200 kilometers on good roads. You drop the car at Localiza at the airport for your next destination in Brazil.
This selfdrive can also be made in reverse direction.
